Since I was small, I always liked staying at my sister's room. By the age of 3, I always pose alot, and especially liked it when I'm touching at my dimples on both cheeks, since I think I look cute in that. After awhile I went over that habit, including my putting up my dress to take picture of my tummy.
Since then I began to wear nice clothes 'til I reached high school. Many said I was pretty and must try to be an actress. I had this childhood friend who was a young star, and is always seen on TV. My mom and I were so "hangang-hanga", and that was the time she encouraged me to attend TV auditions. I got lucky and became successful with it, so I'm here now.
Since I began my career at age 12, being an actress for four more years, I learned alot and earned success thru hard work. Recently I went solo and began to feel the lack of confidence, even cried alot. However, with strength and hope I began to went past thru all those.
Aya first attracted national attention by participating in the 7th All Japan National Beauty Contest, in which she won the special choice award by judges. Aya was born on September 14th 1985 in Tokyo Japan. Her firsttelevision role came in the year 2000 when she starred in the movie "Namida wo fuite" as 14 year old Fuchigama Momo. Her first groundbreaking performance was for the movie "3 Nen B Gumi Kinpachi Sensei", in which she played Tsurumoto Nao, a girl suffering from sexual identity disorder. Her passionate performance captivated many people, and as a result she would later be cast for the TBS hit series "My Little Chef" and the 2003 drama series "Koukou Kyoushi". Her second lead role would be in "Hito natsu no papa e", in which she played a girl named Marimo who goes to look for her father after the death of her mother. Aya also did the voice over for Jane in the movie "Peter Pan 2: The Return to Never Never Land". Her first feature film "Azumi" was shown in theaters around march of 2003 and was a hit with the public. Her carreer as model also flourished in 2001 when Aya appeared on the High School Baseball Association's Posters as Miss July. In august of the same year, she did a commercial for Nisshin Food Productions's new noodle product. In March 2002, she starred in another TV commercial, this time for Nivea's 8x4 Deodorant spray. Around the same time she also did a promotion for Coca Cola's new "Treasure Tea" product. Later in October she shot two more commercials for Bandai, one for their Karaoke station and one for Gundam Seed Action figures. In 2003 she did several more commercials in which she sung the background music. Aya's musical career started in 1999 when she formed the band Z-1 with Mami Nejiki, Mai Fujiya and Manami Nishiwaki. The band released 5 singles, but they scored no hits and the band soon broke up. Two years later, in 2002, Aya signed up with Pony Canyo to start her solo career. Her first single, "Pureness" was a success as it came in on number 4 on the Japanese Oricon Charts. Her next two singles would also be in the top ten of the charts, and her first album "AYAUETO" came in on number 5 of the charts when it was released on March 12th 2003. Aya had many more successful singles and also released a second album, "MESSAGE" on March 3rd of 2004. Aya herself was very surprised with her success as a singer. At the end of her first nationwide tour, she was congratulated on-stage by Japanese fashion icon Yonekura Ryoko on her successful tour. Her latest single "Afurete sou na ai, daite" was released on August 16th of this year. Her new single is scheduled for November 17th, and can be preordered through Yesasia. Aya is also starring in the Live Action version of the anime Ace wo Nerae. Aya's third album Re., was released on December 8th of this year. The argument could easily be made that the Japanese entertainment industry revolves around the ubiquitous aidoru - those young, doe-eyed starlets who somehow never fail to be admired by the boys and imitated by the girls. One need only look at the likes of Fukada Kyoko, Hamasaki Ayumi, and Matsuura Aya to come to one realization: that the Japanese media has made a veritable art form out of boosting cute young girls to a level of popularity that exceeds their actual accomplishments. And in Japan's particular style of celebrity marketing, idols need to be in the spotlight almost twenty-four/seven. Thus, the most sought after starlets must be jacks-of-all-trades, able to switch between being a singer, an actress, a model, and a commercial pitch-woman as the need arises. Of course, having so many skills at their disposal, very rare are the idols who can show extraordinary levels of prowess in any one of the things that they do. But then, the catch-phrase among the marketing geniuses probably reads something like: "Mediocrity is so underrated." It would be hard to prove them wrong. The latest in the line of Swiss Army Knife starlets is Ueto Aya, and many believe she has the potential to join the best of them in terms of popular mediocrity.
The Tokyo native, born on September 14, 1985, got her start in the entertainment industry in August of 1997, when she won a Judges' Special Choice award at the 7th annual All-Japan National Bishoujo (beautiful young girl) Contest. Following this, she was able to land a handful of commercial contracts in 1999. A year later, in the fall 2000 season, she got her first television drama role as a supporting cast member in the Fuji drama "Namida wo Fuite," starring Eguchi Yosuke. This was quickly followed in the spring of 2001 by another small role, this time in the TBS drama "Yome wa Mitsuboshi," starring Kimura Yoshino. Having this bit of prime-time television face-time under her belt, Aya was then able spend the summer of 2001 on some fairly high-profile commercial work. She was tagged as the image character for the summer High School Baseball promotion campaign, and also chosen to appear in a Nisshin Cup o' Noodle commercial. Also, her first photo book, "Hare nochi Ame, nochi Hare" was released by Wani Books just days after her sixteenth birthday, on September 25.
In October of 2001, young Aya got the first big break of her fledgling career. That was when she was cast in TBS's popular drama, "3-Nen B-Gumi Kinpachi Sensei" starring, of course, Takeda Tetsuya as Japan's favorite middle school teacher. Just the face-time alone from appearing in the drama about the super-teacher would have been enough to boost her popularity several notches. But it was her impassioned performance as Tsurumoto Nao, a student in 3-B suffering from gender-identity disorder, that really ingrained her in the consciousness of viewers all over the country. Following her 'graduation' from 3-B in March of 2002, she received offers to do some more high-profile commercial work: pitching Nivea Kaoh's "8x4 powder spray," and pairing with Takenouchi Yutaka to advertise Coca-Cola's "Chahou" brand of bottled tea. She also returned to TBS for a short, five-episode guest role in the never-ending saga that is "Wataru Seken wa Oni Bakari."
Her next major drama appearance came in July of 2002, when she was cast as the younger sister to star Yada Akiko, in the TBS Wednesday night drama, "My Little Chef." Aya's second photo book, entitled "A-I-U-E-TO," was also released by Shueisha days after the start of the drama, on July 17. In August of 2002, she proceeded to make her cross-over into the music world, with the release of her debut single through Pony Canyon. Entitled "Pureness," it quickly made a splash, ranking in at No. 4 in its first week of release. Ueto herself admitted in an interview that she had lacked confidence in her singing abilities, and was pleasantly surprised by the strong sales. Her next single was released soon after, on November 7. Entitled "Kizuna" and used as the CM song for Bandai's Karaoke Station home karaoke machine, this single also managed a strong Oricon debut, ranking in at No. 5 during its first week out. It was also around this time that Aya added to her bulging resume by taking a swing at voice acting. When the Disney movie "Peter Pan 2: Return to Neverland" made its Japan debut in December of 2002, theater-goers got to hear her as the voice of Wendy's daughter, Jane.
In January of 2003, the young starlet got her first chance at playing a drama heroine in the TBS drama "Koukou Kyoushi." In this continuation of the hit 1993 drama of the same title, she took on the role of Hina, a high school student who falls in love with her teacher (played by Fujiki Naohito). The script for the drama was written by popular writer Nojima Shinji, who is known for his deeply psychological plots and the depth of his characters, and it challenged Ueto to play a girl who is led by her terminally ill teacher to believe that she is the one with only a short time left to live. On the music front Aya's third CD single, "Hello," was released on February 26. Though the numbers might have been diluted somewhat because fans already knew that the song would be included on her debut album to be released two weeks later, it still managed to squeak in a Top 10 debut on the Oricon, placing at No. 10 in its first week. The said album, released March 12 and entitled "AYAUETO," debuted at No. 5 on the Oricon Album charts.
May was another eventful month for Ueto Aya. To start things off, her first feature film, "Azumi," hit theaters on the 10th. In the movie, which is based on a popular comic book, she plays a lonely female swordsman who wanders Japan during the "warring states" period, seeking to right wrongs. In addition to that her fourth single, "MESSAGE / PERSONAL," was released on the 14th, debuting at No. 10 on the Oricon singles charts. Also, she wrapped up her nationwide "Pureness" concert tour that month. The final concert made the showbiz news when actress Yonekura Ryoko, who belongs to the same talent agency, showed up to present Aya with a flower bouquet for all her hard work. It was widely reported that young Aya was so overwhelmed by the gesture and by the number of fans in the audience, that she burst into tears on stage. This sentimental act no doubt further endeared her to her legions of admirers.
Starting in July Aya and her on-screen skills were on full display again when she was cast in her first lead role, in TBS's serial drama "Hitonatsu no Papa e." In that drama she plays a high school girl named Marimo, whose mother has recently passed away and left behind information as to the whereabouts of the father that Marimo never knew. The focus of the drama is on the relationship between Marimo and her new-found father Shimpei (played by Kitamura Kazuki), a free-lance private investigator who at first strikes Marimo as being crude, lazy, and utterly incorrigible. As one would expect, Marimo eventually comes to see the more humane and caring side of her father as the drama progresses. Aya's fifth single, entitled "Kanshou" and released August 27, was used as the theme song for the drama. And her commercial for a home-schooling curriculum could also be seen, usually played during the commercial breaks of the very drama of which she was the star. Also, the DVD digest of her concert tour was released on August 6 by Pony Canyon, and her first DVD collection of promotional music videos, entitled "Ueto Aya Clips," was slated for a September 18 release.
Certainly, the speed of Ueto Aya's rise to fame and the enormity of her popularity are not to be taken lightly, and one writer went so far as to compare her to a typhoon, sweeping through the entertainment world. This is not mere hyperbole, as all her hard work had managed to net her three high profile awards for the year 2003. In January, she received the 14th annual Jewelry Best Dresser Award for the teenage division. In February, she was given the Golden Arrow Award for Best Newcomer. Finally, in May, she won the Hashida Award (as in Hashida Sugako, writer of the "Wataru Seken" series) for Top Newcomer of the Year. Also, the January 2003 issue of Nikkei Entertainment magazine estimated that she earned an impressive 25 million yen in commercial contracts for 2002, adding that it was conceivable for her to double that number in 2003. Then, it was reported that over the span of a single month in 2003, Aya was able to appear on the covers of over thirty separate magazines.
